National Science Week officially underway in South Australia

National Science Week has officially launched in South Australia, with science enthusiasts gathering atthe South Australian Museum’s Science Centre on Friday evening (14 August) for a celebration of discovery, creativity and hands-on science.

Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia, and Maddy Massy, South Australia’s National Science Week Ambassador, officially launched the state’s National Science Week program, which runs from 15 to 23 August.

Hosted by Inspiring SA and the National Science Week Committee, the launch showcased the breadth of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities that will take place across the State as part of Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology.

The evening’s stage program showcased science shows which can be seen during National Science Week across SA, including:

·       The Dating Game presented by the South Australian Museum

·       Space presented by the Australian Space Discovery Centre

·       Science Comedy with Jacqueline Barsby

In South Australia, National Science Week features more than 100 ways to get involved and nationally the week engages more than one million people per each year.

Events are delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.

Visitors can explore interactive STEM activities, experience live science shows, and register for exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of the South Australian Museum's research centre and collection spaces, areas rarely open to the public.

Inspiring SA works with scientists, government agencies, citizen scientists, arts organisations, universities, and industry to provide South Australians with opportunities to connect with, be involved in and get excited about science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).

A program of both free and paid South Australian activities can be found on the National Science Week website.

Quotes attributable to National Science Week Ambassador, Science Communicator, Maddy Massy

The annual celebration creates valuable opportunities for people to connect directly with science and the people behind it.

National Science Week gives people the chance to meet the scientists, researchers and innovators working to solve some of the world's biggest challenges.

For young people especially, a single conversation or experience can spark curiosity and help them imagine a future in STEM.

What I love most about National Science Week is that it's optimistic and future-focused. At a time when misinformation can make it difficult to know who to trust, these events create opportunities for people to connect directly with scientists, ask questions and engage with the discoveries shaping our future."

Quotes attributable to Samantha Hamilton, South Australian Museum Director

National Science Week is a great opportunity for South Australians of all ages to discover, explore and celebrate the science and innovation happening in our backyard.

With more than 100 events taking place across the state, plus some great activities at the South Australian Museum, National Science Week connects communities with the researchers, educators and organisations helping to shape our future through science, technology, engineering and mathematics."

I encourage everyone to get involved in National Science Week and take advantage of the many opportunities to learn something new, ask questions and experience the excitement of scientific discovery."
