National Science Week award winners announced

National Science Week has been launched with a glittering ceremony at the South Australian Museum.

The ceremony, hosted by 2024 SA Australian of the Year Tim Jarvis, also recognised the winners of the State’s science awards.

They included the SA Citizen Science Award, the Unsung Hero of Science Award, the Unsung Hero of Science Communication Award, and the 2025 Young Tall Poppy Science Awards.

National Science Week (9-17 August)is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology.

It features more than 2,000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.

South Australian Museum Director of Research and Collections Adam Moriarty said National Science Week was an outstanding opportunity for the science community to highlight the great work it does for the benefit of all Australians.

“Science, and the people who work in it, are crucial to finding solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing the world today, such as climate change, biodiversity loss and the transition to carbon-free energy,” he said.

“The award winners are the exemplars in their fields, and should be congratulated for their remarkable achievements.”

The SA awards were presented by Professor Helen Marshall AM, Clinical Research Director, Women’s and Children’s Health Network and Professor of Vaccinology at the University of Adelaide.

Professor Marshall was the 2023 South Australian Scientist of the Year.

South Australian Minister for Education, Training and Skills, the Honourable Blair Boyer MP, attended and spoke of the importance of National Science Week.
